Retirement Income Planning in Carlsbad
Before we suggest any annuity or policy, we lay out every income source you already have: Social Security, pensions, IRAs, cash value. You get a plain written picture of what arrives each month, where it falls short, and what we would change and why.
A Paycheck Built From the Pieces You Already Have
Retirement income planning is about turning a pile of accounts into dependable monthly income that lasts as long as you do. Most clients come to us with four or five separate pieces: a Social Security estimate, a 401(k) or IRA, maybe a pension, and one or two life insurance policies bought decades ago. Each piece follows different rules for when it pays, how it is taxed and what happens to your spouse or beneficiary.
Our first job is to read those pieces closely. We pull the actual statements and policy contracts, not summaries, and check details like surrender schedules, survivor options and guaranteed interest rates. Only after you have seen those findings do we talk about whether a fixed annuity, a cash value policy or no new product at all fits the gap.
What Our Planning Covers
- Income source inventory
- We list every source with its start date, monthly amount and whether it adjusts for inflation. Seeing a pension that never rises next to Social Security that does changes how you plan the later years.
- Existing policy and annuity review
- We read the contract for each life policy or annuity you hold. That means checking current cash value, surrender charges, loan balances and riders, because an old policy can be a quiet asset or a slow drain.
- Income gap calculation
- We compare your expected spending with guaranteed income and show the shortfall in monthly terms. A number you can see is easier to plan around than a vague worry.
- Annuity options explained
- If guaranteed income makes sense, we walk through immediate annuities, fixed and fixed indexed annuities, and income riders. You see the payout, the fees and the lock-up period for each before deciding anything.
- Spouse and beneficiary protection
- We check what income continues if one spouse dies first, including pension survivor elections and life insurance. That gap is often larger than couples expect.
When a Retirement Income Review Pays Off
Your last paycheck is a few years out
Choices such as the age you claim Social Security and how you take a pension are difficult or impossible to reverse once made. Sorting them out while retirement is still a few years away leaves every path available.
Your savings sit in one market-based account
A steep market drop in the first years of withdrawals can shrink a portfolio far more than the same drop later. This is called sequence-of-returns risk, and some guaranteed income can blunt it.
You own policies you have not looked at in years
Universal life policies bought when interest rates were higher can now be underfunded and headed for a lapse. Whole life policies may hold cash value you could use.
A pension or survivor election is coming up
Military retirees from Camp Pendleton and other pension holders face choices like the Survivor Benefit Plan that permanently set what a spouse receives. We help you compare that against life insurance before you sign.
You are not sure what your spouse would live on
If one of you handles the finances, the other may not know which income stops at a death. That is worth fixing on paper now.
How a Planning Engagement Runs
- 1
Phone conversation
We start by phone with your goals, retirement date and the accounts you hold. We tell you which documents to gather so the review is based on real figures.
- 2
Document review
We meet at your place of business or by phone and go through statements, Social Security estimates and policy contracts line by line. We note anything unclear and confirm it with the carrier or plan administrator.
- 3
Written findings
You get a plain summary of each income source, its strengths and weak points, and the monthly gap. This comes before any recommendation, so you can judge the facts on their own.
- 4
Options and decision
We present the choices that fit, including doing nothing, with the costs, liquidity limits and surrender periods of each. You decide at your own pace.
- 5
Annual check-in
Rates, health and spending change. We review the plan with you each year so it stays matched to how you actually live.

What Shapes the Cost of a Retirement Income Plan
The review and written findings do not obligate you to buy anything. Costs come from any product you choose to put in place, and they vary widely by design. We explain how we are compensated on any product before you sign.
- Type of product
- An immediate annuity has no ongoing fees but gives up access to the principal. Indexed annuities and income riders carry annual charges that reduce growth.
- Surrender period length
- Longer surrender schedules often pay higher rates but tie up your money for years. Early withdrawals beyond the free amount trigger charges.
- Your age and health
- Annuity payouts rise with age at purchase. Life insurance costs rise with age and health conditions, which affects survivor planning.
- Riders and guarantees
- Inflation adjustments, joint lifetime income and long-term care riders each add cost. We show the price of each so you can drop ones you do not need.
Retirement Income Planning Questions
Something not covered here? (760) 388-9220
Do you manage stocks or investment portfolios?
No. We work with insurance-based income tools like annuities and life insurance, and we review how they fit next to the accounts you already have. If you work with an investment advisor, we are glad to coordinate with them.
Should I put all my savings into an annuity?
Almost never. Annuities limit access to your money, so we usually look at covering only essential expenses with guaranteed income and leaving the rest liquid. Your findings will show how much, if any, makes sense.
Can an old life insurance policy help my retirement income?
Sometimes. A whole life policy with built-up cash value can be borrowed against or exchanged into an annuity through a 1035 exchange without immediate tax. We check loan balances and surrender charges first, because those can change the answer.
Do you give tax advice?
We explain how annuity and policy income is generally taxed, but we are not tax preparers. For decisions like Roth conversions or withdrawal order, we recommend reviewing our findings with your CPA.
Can we meet if I am in Oceanside, Vista or San Marcos?
Yes. Plenty of the people we plan with are in the towns around Carlsbad, from Encinitas north to Oceanside and inland to San Marcos and Escondido. We can sit down at your business or go through the documents together by phone, whichever suits your schedule.
